VCI Paper: Industrial Corrosion Protection Paper for Metal Packaging

Metal parts rarely fail in service the way they fail in storage and transit. Sitting in a crate or a shipping container, exposed surfaces develop uniform rust, stacked components trap moisture in their contact points, and mixed-metal assemblies quietly corrode through galvanic attack; all before the part is ever installed. VCI paper corrosion protection addresses this with a dual mechanism: vapor-phase inhibitors that saturate the enclosed airspace, plus contact-phase protection wherever the paper touches the metal surface.

“VCI Paper doesn’t just wrap parts, it actively fights corrosion from the air and from the surface simultaneously.”

GreenVCI VCI Paper is built for this exact problem: protecting ferrous, non-ferrous, and multi-metal components during the long, uncontrolled window between manufacturing and use.

What Is VCI Paper?

VCI Paper is kraft paper saturated with advanced Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) compounds. Unlike oil-based preservatives or barrier films alone, it protects through two mechanisms at once. The inhibitors volatilize off the paper and migrate into the surrounding airspace, settling onto every exposed metal surface inside the enclosure, including the internal cavities and crevices that sprayed coatings cannot reach. Where the paper is in direct contact with the metal, a second contact-phase layer reinforces the protection.

The result is a clean, ready-to-use packaging material that leaves no oils, greases, or residue behind. Parts unwrap ready for assembly with no degreasing step, no cleanup labor. GreenVCI VCI Paper delivers up to 12 months of protection in sealed conditions across our family of product grades, GVPR100 through GVPR410.

6 Key Advantages

1. Dual-Action Protection Vapor-phase inhibitors fill the enclosure while contact-phase inhibitors protect the surfaces the paper touches directly. This VCI paper dual action vapor contact protection is what allows a single material to guard both the wrapped surface and the surrounding air space.

2. Different Grades for Every Metal.  Whether you need multi-metal VCI paper for a mixed assembly or a non-ferrous grade for copper and aluminum, our product family covers the requirement.

3. Clean and Ready. No oils, no greases, no residue. Parts arrive ready for assembly, eliminating the degreasing and cleanup labor that oil-based preservation methods demand.

4. 12-Month Sealed Protection. Consistent inhibition for up to 12 months in sealed conditions, enough to cover long international supply chains and extended warehouse storage without re-treatment.

5. Industry Compliance. Certified to MIL-PRF-3420H, TL 8135-0002 (VIA), and MIL-STD-3010C Methods 4031 and 3005. The formulation is built to the standards Tier 1 automotive OEMs expect, making it suitable for VCI kraft paper packaging programs.

6. Green Chemistry, No Compromise. 0% nitrite, no secondary amines. TRGS 615 compliant, REACH SVHC-free, and ROHS compliant, with biodegradability verified to KS I ISO 7827 (OECD 301A). The chemistry is plant-based and biodegradable, non-toxic, nitrite-free; a genuine differentiator, not a label.

How It Works

VCI Paper protects through molecular migration. The inhibitor compounds embedded in the kraft paper slowly volatilize, releasing VCI molecules into the enclosed airspace. These molecules travel through the air and adsorb onto every exposed metal surface, forming an invisible, microscopically thin molecular layer. That layer blocks the moisture, oxygen, and corrosive ions that drive the electrochemical corrosion process: the same process detailed in our guide to how rust forms and spreads.

Because the inhibitors travel as a vapor, they reach geometry that surface coatings miss entirely: blind holes, internal bores, threaded sections, and the tight gaps between stacked parts. This is what makes VCI paper effective against crevice corrosion, where moisture concentrates in confined spaces, and against galvanic corrosion in mixed-metal assemblies.

Where the paper physically contacts the metal, the contact phase provides direct, on-surface inhibition. Together, the two mechanisms defend against uniform, crevice, pitting, galvanic, and fretting corrosion — the full spectrum of attack metal parts face in storage and transit. When the package is opened and the airspace clears, the molecular layer dissipates harmlessly, leaving the metal clean and unaltered.

Anti Rust Paper Compliance and Performance

VCI Paper carries its own product-specific certification set. Note that these specifications are unique to the paper line and are not interchangeable with GreenVCI’s masterbatch or film certifications.

Performance:

  • TL 8135-0002: VIA (Volatile Inhibitor Ability)
  • MIL-PRF-3420H: Compatibility with Copper
  • MIL-STD-3010C Method 4031: VIA testing
  • MIL-STD-3010C Method 3005: Contact Corrosivity testing

Safety and Environmental:

  • 0% nitrite, No secondary amines
  • TRGS 615 compliant
  • REACH SVHC-free
  • ROHS compliant
  • KS I ISO 7827 (OECD 301A): verified biodegradable

For procurement teams writing specs, the VCI paper MIL-PRF-3420H certification is the key copper-compatibility benchmark, confirmation that the paper will not stain or attack copper and copper alloys, a common failure mode of cheaper inhibitor papers. The nitrite-free VCI paper TRGS 615 compliance, paired with OECD 301A biodegradability, makes GreenVCI VCI Paper a biodegradable corrosion inhibitor paper that satisfies both worker-safety and environmental-disposal requirements without trade-offs.

Why VCI Paper Over Conventional Methods

Traditional rust prevention typically means oil coatings, desiccant packs, and barrier films working separately. VCI Paper consolidates that protection into a single material:

  • No messy oils to apply or remove. Parts stay clean and assembly-ready.
  • Reaches what sprays miss. Vapor-phase inhibitors penetrate internal cavities, bores, and crevices.
  • Tolerant of imperfect seals. Dual-action protection holds even when an enclosure isn’t perfectly airtight.
  • No hazardous waste stream. Plant-based and biodegradable, the used paper is recyclable, not a disposal liability.
  • One material, three jobs. A single layer of VCI Paper can replace the oil + desiccant + barrier film stack.

Integration Strategy

VCI Paper performs best as part of a layered protection system. For demanding applications, combine it with other GreenVCI solutions:

  • VCI Shrink Film: for oversized loads and outdoor or palletized shipments that need a sealed outer barrier.
  • VCI Powder Pack: dropped inside large enclosures for additional vapor-phase inhibitor reserve.
  • VCI Emitters: for long-term storage where the protection window extends well beyond a standard shipping cycle.

All of these draw on the same core VCI chemistry that GreenVCI has developed and manufactured in-house since 1994, the same inhibitor science behind our VCI Masterbatch concentrate.
